Argentina introduces high quality, affordable wines

Argentina introduces high quality, affordable wines
Plenty of choice: A selection of bottles of Malbec red wine, from various Argentinian vineyards, which offers traits different to its French ancestor.()
These are great and exciting times for Indonesian wine drinkers with the entrance of new players and brands into the local wine market.

Ten years ago, Indonesian wine drinkers’ options were limited to Australian Shiraz or Bordeaux and Sauvignon from France. These limited options also made wine prices quiet high and only affordable for people with deep pockets.

However, the emergence of South American wines in recent years has brought a new excitement to the market and consumers. More options are now available and wine has become more and more affordable.

Wine expert Yohan Handoyo said at a recent wine tasting event in Jakarta that the emergence of South American wines also offered something refreshing for seasoned drinkers.

“People get tired drinking the same wine over and over again. People want to try something new,” Yohan said.

One of the latest South American varieties that has decided to plunge into the Indonesian wine market is Malbec from Argentina.

The Malbec variety was originally cultivated in the southwest of France thousands of years ago. The resulting wines, named “from Cahors” after their region, have enjoyed increasing recognition since the time of the Roman Empire. Their prestige was consolidated in the Middle Ages and they have gained full recognition in modern times.

When a phylloxera aphid blight destroyed French viticulture toward the end of the 19th century, the Malbec almost fell into oblivion. However, a culture of appreciation for Malbec had already been formed, which laid the foundations for the development of Argentine Malbec sometime later.
Malbec was then brought to Argentina from France in 1853 by Michel Aimé Pouget, a French agronomist who was hired by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, an Argentinian politician who later became the seventh president of the country, to run the Quinta Agronómica de Mendoza.

Yohan, who recently visited Argentina to see the country’s wine industry, said that despite the fact that the Malbec grape variety originated from France, the particular variety developed in Argentina had special and one-of-a-kind characteristics that were molded through the unique nature of Argentinian vineyards.

“What I find interesting about Argentinian wine is the quality of the grapes. They are very healthy and are absolutely amazing. A lot of wine producers in Argentina use very little pesticide in growing their grapes and the water they use is natural pristine water coming from the melting ice of Mount Andes,” he said.

In addition, Yohan said that Argentinian vineyards grew their grapes at higher altitudes compared to those in Europe or other Western wine-producing countries.

“In Europe, the highest peak for a vineyard is at 900 meters above sea level. In Argentina, the altitude is between 600 meters and 3,000 meters above sea level. The higher a vineyard is in Argentina, the better prestige and reputation it has for its wines,” Yohan said.

“What happens to grapes that are being grown at such high altitude? They will receive high exposure of ultraviolet that, in a way, makes them mutate. They will produce a lot of anthocyanin, a substance that will give that reddish color to grapes and function to prevent them from sunburn.”

“The anthocyanin is also responsible for giving stronger flavor to the grapes. So, wine products from Argentina have a very beautiful and dark color along with a very strong and highly concentrated flavor in every sip.”

Bayern to begin title defense at home to Hamburg

Bayern to begin title defense at home to Hamburg
AFP
German champions Bayern Munich will begin their defence of the Bundesliga title at home to Hamburg on Friday, August 14, after the fixtures for the 2015/16 season were announced.
Pep Guardiola's side won 8-0 in last season's corresponding fixture against Hamburg, who needed to beat Karlsruhe in a play-off to avoid being relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time.
Before the opening league game, Bayern will face Cup winners Wolfsburg in the Super Cup on August 1.
Bayern have romped to the title in each of the last two seasons, but club legend Franz Beckenbauer told Sky Sports: "I can see Bayern winning the title again but it will be more difficult this time.
"The opposition have now worked out the way Bayern play and are no longer as frightened when they come up against them."
Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge of Borussia Dortmund after replacing Jurgen Klopp will be at home against Borussia Moenchengladbach on August 15 or 16.
Bayern and Dortmund meet for the first time at the Allianz Arena on the first weekend in October in a clash with the end of the Munich Oktoberfest.
Dortmund will entertain Schalke in the first Ruhr derby of the season on the first weekend in November.
Last season's runners-up Wolfsburg begin their campaign at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, who have Armin Veh back as coach to replace the departed Thomas Schaaf.
The 2015/16 Bundesliga season will finish on May 14, 27 days before the start of Euro 2016 in France. (ren)(+++

Germany, France to meet in women's World Cup quarterfinals

France coach Philippe Bergeroo has had six months to worry about meeting top-ranked Germany in the quarterfinals of the women's World Cup, and four days to prepare for the actual match.
The No. 3 team in the world will play Germany, ranked No. 1 by FIFA, in a quarterfinal match being called an "early final" and a "final before its time." The winner likely will be the favorite to win the whole tournament.
"We don't think to the final or the semifinal. We are thinking about tomorrow's game, which is very important for our team," Bergeroo said at Montreal's Olympic Stadium on Thursday, a day before the European neighbors will play for a spot in the semifinals.
"We know their strengths. We also know their weaknesses. We've been observing them for some time."
And what they've seen is a two-time World Cup champion that is well-stocked for another run at the championship.
"Already we are playing against a team that is classed first in FIFA. So we are the outsiders compared to that team," Bergeroo said. "But we have a lot of ambition for that game."
Here are some other things to look for in Friday's game:
QUARTERFINAL OF DEATH
The Germans went 10-0 in European qualifying, outscoring their opponents 62-4. In Canada they beat the Ivory Coast 10-0 and Thailand 4-0 in the group stage, with a 1-1 draw against Norway in between. The Germans beat Sweden 4-1 in the round of 16.
And what do they get for that?
A matchup with the No. 3 team in the world, which also went 10-0 in qualifying while outscoring its opponents 54-3.
"When in December the teams were drawn, we could see what would happen if we were first, what would happen if France was first," Germany coach Silvia Neid said. "You could predict what might happen.
"Yes, we will have a strong opponent tomorrow. This was all predictable after the draw. That is what you have to live with."
OLD FRIENDS
Germany has won the women's World Cup twice, in 2003 and '07, and is an eight-time European champion. France failed to qualify for the tournament four of its first five tries, and has won just two World Cup knockout games in its history.
But France has moved up to No. 3 in the world. And a 2-0 victory over Germany in a friendly in Offenbach in October may boost the confidence of Les Bleues.
"We have narrowed the field somewhat," captain Wendie Renard said. "In the friendly game we were able to see that."
The French beat England 1-0 in group play before a 2-0 upset to Colombia. They responded by beating Mexico 5-0, and then eliminated South Korea 3-0 in the round of 16.
France's only other World Cup knockout win was a penalty kick victory over England in 2011. The French finished fourth that year.
EXPERIENCE
Neid has been at the help of the German women's national team since 2005, leading the team to the World Cup title in 2007.
She has seen the sport improve, with teams getting better technically, getting faster and better at training.
"The team in 2007 would not be a team that could win this year. And the ones that made second place and third place would not get that far," she said. "The whole of women's soccer has gotten better."
Bergeroo also has plenty of World Cup experience. Just not any that will be especially helpful to his team.
He was a backup goalkeeper on the French team that finished third in the 1986 World Cup, but did not play. He was also an assistant coach on the team that won the 1998 men's World Cup.
"I covered, pretty much, men's football with this," he said. "Now with this women's final, I believe what I have to bring is a lot of calm and confidence for this team."
AT HOME INDOORS
France played in Montreal's Olympic Stadium for the first time in the round of 16, when it beat South Korea 3-0. The crowd seemed to be on the side of Les Bleues, serenading them with the French national anthem.
But the bigger problem for Germany could be its lack of familiarity with the building, which was built for the 1976 Olympics. Originally designed with a retractable roof, the fabric was prone to tearing and it was replaced with a blue roof that is permanently closed.
"I must say it is a different feeling," said Neid, who was in the building to watch France play South Korea on Sunday. "We don't have this in Germany, that you play inside in the summer. I'm surprised that the roof can't be opened." (hhr)

Former PSSI chairman invited to discuss RI soccer crisis

Former PSSI chairman invited to discuss RI soccer crisis
Former Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) chairman Djohar Arifin Husin and Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi held a meeting to discuss Indonesia’s soccer crisis at the Youth and Sports Ministry office in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“I was invited by the youth and sports minister to attend a meeting today. Regarding what topics will be discussed in the meeting, I don’t know. I came here just to listen to the minister’s directives,” he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Djohar said he was invited because he had been PSSI chairman since April 17, or before the association’s extraordinary meeting (KLB) in Surabaya, East Java, on April 18.
Djohar said he hoped that Indonesian soccer could return to normal so that both soccer clubs and players could "revive" again.
“This is what we have to think about. They have their own future. I was invited to come here primarily to save people who depend on soccer for their livelihood,” said the former PSSI chairman for the 2011-2015 period.
Earlier, the Youth and Sports Ministry confirmed that it would hold a meeting with PSSI officials at the ministry’s office on Tuesday.
“There will be a meeting with PSSI tomorrow [Tuesday]. We don’t dare to not obey what has been requested by the House of Representatives’ Commission X [which oversees sports affairs],” said the ministry’s deputy minister of the harmonization and partnership division, Gatot S. Dewa Broto, on Monday.
He said two agendas would be discussed in the meeting, namely the fate of Indonesia’s soccer competitions and FIFA sanctions.
“Concerning the sanctions, we will discuss how the sanctions should not take too long,” said Gatot. (ebf

Juventus moved strengthened its attacking options by signing Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic on Monday from Atletico Madrid for 19 million euros ($21.5 million).
Juventus said on its website that Mandzukic signed a four-year contract. He's the second high-profile forward to join the Serie A champion and Champions League runner-up, which also signed Paulo Dybala from Palermo.
They could help fill the absence of Carlos Tevez, who has been linked with a return to Argentina and club Boca Juniors.
Serie A rival Inter Milan, meanwhile, was close to completing a deal for highly rated Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, who was in the Italian city for a medical exam on Monday. (hhr)

Paraguay, Uruguay draw 1-1 and advance to Copa quarters

Paraguay, Uruguay draw 1-1 and advance to Copa quarters
Defending champion Uruguay and Paraguay drew 1-1 in their last group game and both advanced to the Copa America quarterfinals on Saturday.
Jose Maria Gimenez put Uruguay in front in the 29th minute on a header, and Lucas Barrios leveled with his own header a minute before halftime.
Both teams had chances in the second half, though neither grabbed control. The game was a rematch of the 2011 final in Buenos Aires, where Uruguay won 3-0.
The draw suited both teams, though defender Gimenez said that was never the intention.
"There was a lot to play for — the prestige, wearing the national team shirt," Gimenez said. "None of the teams here are playing for a draw, nor to lose."
Edinson Cavani, Uruguay's leader with Luis Suarez banned from the tournament, has done little so far. He had at least three clear openings to score. On his best chance, Cavani was stopped in the 68th by Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar on a point-blank shot.
Paraguay has had a strong tournament, drawing with Uruguay and Argentina.
"I'm very happy to show off the strength that Paraguay has," Argentina-born Barrios said. "It's an important team, and we've shown that right from the first match. We are stronger than ever."
In Group B, Paraguay has five points, and Uruguay four. Argentina, on four, also advanced before its late game against Jamaica.
Bolivia and Chile advanced on Friday from Group A, with Group C matches wrapping up on Sunday.
The quarterfinals begin on Wednesday. (dmr)

Golf: Texan duo Spieth and Reed lead US Open

Golf: Texan duo Spieth and Reed lead US Open
WOODS STARE: Patrick Reed shakes hands with Jordan Spieth as Tiger Woods looks on in this file photo (Scott Hallerana/AFP)
Ryder Cup teammates Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth charged up the leaderboard, but the American assault on Friday didn't include Tiger Woods who crashed out of the US Open.
The two Texas natives were co-leaders after 36 holes at the $10 million tournament at the 7,695 foot Chambers Bay golf course, the longest in major championship history.
The 24-year-old Reed had a 69 for a five-under total of 135, joining reigning Masters champion Spieth, 21, who had a fine 67.
Overnight co-leader Dustin Johnson was one stroke adrift with a 71 as he was tied with South Africa's Branden Grace (67) who was the only non-American in the top four. US golfers held eight of the top 11 positions on Friday.
Grouped on 137 were US trio Tony Finau (68), Daniel Summerhays (67) and Ben Martin (70) and Joost Luiten of the Netherlands (69).
The two young Americans Spieth and Reed formed a successful Ryder Cup pairing against the Europeans at Gleneagles, Scotland in late September.
Spieth is once again proving he can shine on the biggest stage as he surged up the leaderboard by making birdies on three of four holes beginning at No. 14.
Spieth, who posted a wire-to-wire victory at Augusta in April, is seeking to become the first man to sweep the Masters and US Open since Woods in 2002.
"If you shoot in the 60s at a US Open you are going to be pleased," Spieth said. "I will draw on my experience at Augusta, but my patience here has to be that much higher.
"At Augusta I was making everything. It would be nice if I could do that here. This course is going to get tougher and tougher."
There was some drama on the final hole of the day for Spieth's threesome when playing partner Jason Day, of Australia, collapsed on the side of the fairway after suffering a bout of vertigo.
The Queensland native was treated by several medical staff on the course for about 10 minutes before mustering enough courage to finish out his round despite being in obvious discomfort as he made those final shots.
His manager Bud Martin said Day, who shot a 70, expects to be well enough to resume his tournament on Saturday.
Reed also climbed up the leaderboard Friday as he briefly held the tournament lead, but a bogey at the last dropped him into a tie with Spieth.
Reed, who proclaimed himself as one of the "top five players in the world" after winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March of last year, would like to validate that boast with his first major title at Chambers Bay.
Reed had a chance to hold onto the 36-hole lead but his 18 foot putt for par on 18 stopped on the edge of the cup for a tap in bogey.
Johnson had three birdies on the front nine and appeared to be headed into the weekend with at least a share of the lead.
But the long-hitting American had a frustrating finish with back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 to drop to a tie for third.
The USGA wanted a more difficult second round after 25 players broke par on Thursday. They did it by extending Chambers Bay to 7,695 feet (2,345 meter), making it not only the longest ever in a US Open but also in major championship history.
The front nine alone was 4,020 feet. They also made the first hole a par-five instead of a par-four and altered 18 so that it became a tricky par four.
World number one Rory McIlroy and six-time US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson both punched their tickets into the weekend.
McIlroy was making no progress from the two over mark he started the day on until he eagled the par-four 12th.
But he took a double-bogey at the par-three 17th and settled for a second straight 72 and a four-over total which got him into the weekend.
Woods wasn't so lucky as he had the door slammed shut behind him Friday.
Woods added a 76 to his opening 80 and, at 16 over par, he was on his way home after another disastrous tournament, tied for 150th place.
Mickelson fired a four-over 74 to keep his bid for a career grand slam alive.
Other notables missing the cut were Rickie Fowler, defending champ Martin Kaymer, Bubba Watson and 15-year-old amateur Cole Hammer. (ika)
